When to go

Leave early in the morning to avoid the mid-day heat and Summer storms.
In the early morning, you will have more chance to see wild animals.
Adapt your walk to your level of skill and your physical condition.
Going up, 300 m of altitude gained in an hour is a good average, plus, allow 4 km of distance per hour walked.

Equipment

Good walking boots are essential.
Children must also be well equipped.
Wear simple sports cloths, don't forget warm, waterproof clothing, cap or sunhat, sunglasses, and suntan cream. (sunburn is a major problem in mountainous regions.)
Binoculars are very useful in observing animals easily and also the varied countrysides you will encounter. Take a good backpack, plenty of water, a picnic and several high energy bars.
A compass and altimeter are strongly advised especially if you go off the tracks and in times of bad weather.
A detailed map (1 :25 000) of the chosen area is essential, especially if you intend to go off the tracks. For the Upper Verdon region, the blue series IGN maps at 1 : 25 000 are perfect.
