Walks PDF Print E-mail
Many guide books about walks in the Upper Verdon are available in the Tourist offices and bookshops of the valley. Here is a small selection from one of them.

1) Taken from the book "50 Sommets sans corde" by Jean-Louis DAUMAS, edited by Didier Richard :

a)
Le Laupont (2 432 m)

Starting Point : Beauvezer, pont du Verdon, altitude 1 150 m

Total change of altitude : 1 300 m

Duration : 6 hours

Difficulty: Steep passages ; sometimes unstable in off track parts.

Interest : Summit which dominates the valley. Panorama onto the mountain Chamatte, on the summits of the valley of Chasse and the massif of Pelat to the North.

How to get to the start : Get to the village via the D 908. Opposite the Maison de Pays, take the D 252 in the direction of Villars Heyssier. Cross the bridge over the river Verdon, and leave the car on the left next to the river.
Up : Take the left hand tarmac road but leave the path which leads to the "Petit Lac" on the left . Take the right hand path in the direction of "Laupon" and the "Croix du Couguyon" (red and yellow markings). The path follows a north bound curve and rejoins another track. Carry straight on and cross a stream at 1359 m altitude. A little after, you arrive at a junction. Take the left hand path. Climb through the forest and cross Allègres ravine and the Graus ravine. Keep to the left of the "barre de la Roubeirette" cliff and arrive at a point 1806 m altitude. The path which goes to "croix de Couguyon" continues left but take the east route. Cross the "Mélèzes" ravine and continue to a junction at 1892 m altitude. To the left the path goes to "le Monier", but continue to the right, pass the "cabane du Défens" 2053 m, and leave the path at the moment it crosses the upper part of the Mélèzes ravine just under the summit. Climb the ravine the best you can (!) until the summit pylon.
Down : Reverse itinerary
b) Le Grand Coyer (2693 m)
Starting Point : Villars Heyssier, 1300 m
Total change of altitude : 1400 m
Duration : 8h00
Difficulty: Steep passages ; sometimes unstable in off track parts.
Interest : Very beautiful 360° panorama notably onto the summits which separate the Verdon - Var rivers. Admire the Pelens needles. Varied countrysides to enjoy, gorges, forests, mountain pastures.
How to get to the start : Get to the village via the D 908. Opposite the Maison de Pays, take the D 252 in the direction of Villars Heyssier. Go through the village and continue until the car park just before the Gorges St Pierre.
Up : Take the Gorges footpath. Carry on for about 45 minutes until a junction by a bridge. Turn right in the direction of the "cabane de Congerman". Cross the bridge and climb by means of a steep path, lots of hairpin bends, until you see ruins of old buildings. Continue on this path and pass the last building (the one in the best condition) Take the left hand path which continues to climb in the same fashion. Leave the forest, cross the hillside and rejoin the Pisse en l'Air plateau. Follow the cairns. Pass a spring and continue along the sides of the Petit Coyer. Don't take the straight on track which goes south-west, but turn leftwards and climb the west side of Carton (2 hairpins). On arriving at the ridge, the path turns towards the other side and continues until the bottom of Détroit 2472 m altitude. Don't go down to the east or west, continue off the track across the hillside to the south, and take the east side of the ridge. Then come up a scree slope slightly leftwards to the summit.
Down : From the summit retrace your tracks to the bottom of Détroit. Don't take the path you took to come up, but turn left (west) and follow a path which goes down the right hand side of the Pré des Brousses ravine. Continue until the forestry cabanes of Pasquier. Don't take the path to the south-west which goes towards the cabane Vieille, take the right hand path which goes down to the north-east and crosses the Pasquier ravine. Continue to the bottom of l'Orgéas 1992 m altitude. Take the middle path; not the left hand forestry track which goes down to Ondres, nor the right hand one which goes back up towards Pisse en l'Air. This middle path rejoins the "cabanes de Congerman" where you retake the "up" itinerary.
